Only a few South African producers enjoy the success that DJ and Producer Nate Raubenheimer, better known to most as Protoculture, has had over the span of his career. Hailed by many of his piers as one of South Africa’s biggest dance music exports, he has also left his mark on the international dance scene with his trademark blend of melodic and emotionally charged compositions and DJ sets.
Sucked into the art of music production at a young age, Nate made the leap to pursue a music career professionally after completing his studies in Audio Engineering at age 20, immediately taking the international psy-trance scene by storm. His international debut came at the United Kingdom’s famed Glastonbury Festival. With the release of his first artist album, “Refractions”, and the follow up “Circadians”, a slew of international performances ensued worldwide, seeing Nate travel to all four corners of the globe. From London to Tokyo, Sao Paulo to Moscow, Protoculture was a staple at psy-trance festivals around the globe, most notably at Glade in the UK, Universo Parallello in Bahia, Brazil, Earthcore Global Carnival in Melbourne, Australia and Ozora Festival near Budapest.

Shadow Chronicles

Nate Raubenheimer AKA Protoculture and more recently under his new moniker, Shadow Chronicles shot to fame in 2003 with his smash hit album, ‘Refractions’. The follow up ‘Circadians’ and ‘Love Technology’ solidified his position as one of South Africa’s top musical exports and as one of the psy trance greats.
Touring the world, his music has taken him to all four corners of the globe playing festival stalwarts such as Glastonbury Music Festival, Fuji Rock, Ozora, Universo Paralello, Earthcore and A State of Trance to name but a few.
In recent years Nate steered his Protoculture brand in a new direction wanting to explore different genres of music, signing with Armin van Buuren powerhouse label, Armada Music where he carved out a position for himself in the progressive trance, touring with music legends Paul Oakenfold, BT, Above and Beyond and more.
With an ever changing music scene, Nate returned to producing psytrance after a 7 year sebaticle under the guise of Shadow Chronicles, wanting to return to his roots in the underground culture he grew up with, bringing his signature melodic psychedelic sound back to the forefront of the psytrance scene. 2017 saw the release of a slew of singles on Iboga and Future Music records including the massive ‘g.AI.a’, ‘Love & Light’ and ‘Another Earth’. With an album currently in the works and tour dates kicking off from Japan to Mexico, keep an eye out for Shadow Chronicles on a dance floor near you.
